This lens has has a large working distance for macro-photography. Although the autofocus is not as fast as more modern AF-S lenses it does allow the capture of small critters at a distance. It would be great if Nikon could release a modern autofocus version of this lens. On a DX sensor this lens is effectively a 300mm macro (be sure to use very high shutter speeds!)

Distortion: this lens isn't perfect, exhibiting moderate distortion of 0.11-0.28% pin-cushion on DX sensors and 0.25-0.45% pin-cushion on FX sensors which can be corrected with software if required.

This lens is recommended for it superb optics and long working distance for all Nikon cameras
