This lens has autofocus and a focal length suitable for photographing insects. Although not particularly fast it does allow the capture of flighty small critters. Apertures from f/5.6 to f/11 give good resolution on a D500 at  0.27 and a D800 at x 0.41. At higher magnification (1:1) the resolution is not as good and there is fall-off towards the corners. 

Distortion: This lens exhibits a 0.14% to 0.23% barrel distortion on a D500, 0.34% barrel distortion at x 0.41 and 0.36% pin cushion at x1 on a D800.

This lens has resolution to achieve the maximum benefit on sensors up to 24 MP (including D800)
