This lens is unique in a Nikon F-mount as it extends to a magnification of x 2 (actually a touch less) without the use of extension tubes. The resolutions achieved are really impressive compared with the other options for achieving higher magnification such as extension tubes and reversing lenses with a bellows. Working distances are around 70 mm at highest magnification which is great allowing more illumination options. The lens appears to be optimized for high magnification as the performance at lower magnifications is not as high as the best lenses tested.
